Apple's retail locations across the globe saw significant foot traffic today as queues formed overnight for the debut of the iPhone Duo, the company's first foldable device. However, those hoping to purchase the handset on site without a prior reservation encountered significant hurdles, as the retailer's previously issued warning regarding limited inventory proved accurate for many locations.
The device became available for purchase at Apple Store locations worldwide on Friday, October 23. In a statement issued this morning, the company described scenes of customers filling stores globally to experience the new foldable form factor. Retail staff were documented providing hands-on demonstrations and personalized shopping assistance to those in attendance.
The company also released images from various locations worldwide to commemorate the launch event. Additionally, readers of the source publication contributed photos from their respective local stores, depicting the scale of the gathering. Lines formed overnight in anticipation of securing a walk-in unit, but the availability of such stock remains a primary concern for those who attended without an online reservation.
Apple had previously advised that inventory for walk-in purchases would be limited, and reports from shoppers indicate that stock was depleted quickly at various locations. Store associates have been advising disappointed customers to check the Apple Store app for in-store inventory details, with that information becoming available at 10 a.m. ET the following day.
Executives from the company were present at specific retail locations to observe the launch. Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, was stationed at the Fifth Avenue flagship in New York City alongside retail executive Vanessa Trigub. Meanwhile, Apple CEO John Ternus marked the occasion in Austin, Texas, at the Domain NORTHSIDE location with retail chief Deirdre O’Brien.
Ternus's presence in Texas aligns with other company activities in the region. He toured Apple's offices in Austin earlier this week. Furthermore, the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix is scheduled to take place in Austin this weekend. Apple holds the exclusive streaming rights for Formula 1 in the United States.
The rollout of the iPhone Duo marks the official introduction of the manufacturer's first foldable smartphone. The global launch event drew customers to retail locations seeking immediate access to the hardware, though the supply constraints have complicated the process for those who did not secure an online order in advance.
For shoppers who were unable to purchase a device on site, the path forward involves monitoring digital inventory channels. The company's guidance directs users to the Apple Store application tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET to determine if specific retail locations have received additional stock for in-store purchase.
