The artificial intelligence landscape is shifting as one of its most significant players moves closer to a public listing. Anthropic is expected to go public later this year. The valuation could reach as high as $2 trillion. This move will create a financial windfall for many investors. Both early-stage backers and later-stage funds stand to profit significantly. Even at the company's most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by various venture capitalists and early supporters already amount to billions of dollars. Bloomberg has calculated the current worth of several key backers based on that last round's price.

Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, holds a prominent position in the company's history. He invested in the Series A round in 2021. At that time, the startup was valued at $461 million, according to PitchBook data. Schmidt currently owns approximately one percent of the company. Even at the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion. This represents a substantial increase from his initial entry point into the AI sector.

Iconiq made a massive late-stage bet on the company last year. The investment outfit wrote a check for $6 billion. This occurred when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That large position is now worth $17 billion. There is potential for this value to double again once the IPO takes place. This demonstrates the continued confidence of large capital providers in the company's growth trajectory.

Menlo Ventures has been deeply involved in Anthropic's funding history. The firm led the Series D round of financing. Over time, it has invested more than $1 billion in the company. This cumulative investment now represents a stake worth $14 billion. The firm's leadership role in a major funding round highlights its strategic importance to the AI lab.

Sequoia, a well-known venture capital firm, entered the picture more recently. It backed the AI lab for the first time earlier this year. At that point, the company was already valued at $380 billion. The firm made a $3 billion investment. This purchase gave it about one percent ownership. This means the firm has already more than doubled its initial investment. The rapid appreciation in value underscores the high demand for equity in leading AI companies.

Sound Ventures, which was launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant stake. The firm invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. It has since funneled an additional $400 million into the company. This combined investment results in a stake that is worth billions now. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm.

Spark Capital holds a unique position among the investors. It is the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round. At that time, the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has ballooned more than ninetyfold. The stake is now worth $7 billion. This massive return illustrates the potential for early backers to see exponential growth in their portfolios.

These valuations reflect the intense competition for ownership in the leading AI lab. The company's trajectory from a $461 million valuation in 2021 to a potential $2 trillion public listing is remarkable. Investors who entered early are seeing their fortunes rise dramatically. Late-stage entrants are also securing multi-billion dollar positions. The upcoming IPO will likely be one of the largest events in the stock market this year. It will cement the financial success of those who backed Anthropic's rise in the AI industry.
