The economic and social fabric of southern Jordan was shaken on Friday when a targeted assault struck a place of worship, disrupting a community that has long maintained stability in a region often viewed as a safe haven for investment and tourism.

Authorities confirmed that at least seven people lost their lives during the incident, while thirty-four others sustained injuries. The attack took place in the village of Hammoud, located within the Karak governorate. Officials described the event as an unusual occurrence of violence against Christians in a nation that is predominantly Sunni Muslim. Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya addressed the media to provide these figures, attributing the shooting to a group of extremists who targeted the congregation.

The specific dynamics of the assault were detailed by the public security directorate, which stated that the attackers arrived in a vehicle. As a funeral procession was underway, the gunmen exited their vehicle and stormed the compound of a Greek Orthodox church before opening fire. The location is significant because Karak possesses a notable Christian population and sits approximately 110 miles south of the capital, Amman. A search for the responsible parties is currently ongoing. The state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka aired video footage showing three individuals involved in the shooting. Two of them were wearing casual clothing and holding pistols, while the third carried a long gun. The video shows them firing from a street entrance and moving into the area.

An eyewitness who provided a statement to Al-Mamlaka described the rapid and intense nature of the violence. The witness reported that the vehicle carrying the attackers stopped, and the men fired continuously for five minutes before driving away. The witness estimated that between 150 and 200 people were present inside and around the church at the time of the attack. Furthermore, the witness noted that the majority of the victims were individuals between the ages of 50 and 70, indicating a specific demographic impact on the local community. Mohammed Al-Momani, the Minister of Government Communications, confirmed that security forces are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the event.

High-level political reactions have already begun to shape the national response. King Abdullah II issued a statement on social media promising the harshest retaliation against those responsible. He emphasized that every Jordanian life is precious and declared that the nation would strike with an iron fist against those threatening its stability. This strong leadership response is intended to reassure citizens and observers that the state maintains control and is committed to protecting its population.

International figures have also weighed in, with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, the only Christian head of state in the Arab world, condemning the event. In a statement from the presidency, he labeled the shooting a heinous terrorist attack. He asserted that the incident reaffirms that terrorism has no specific religion or homeland, aiming instead to strike at coexistence and spread strife. This international attention underscores the symbolic importance of the attack on regional unity.

The region has a history of similar disruptions to public safety. In 2016, Karak experienced deadly violence when gunmen ambushed police in a series of attacks, including one at a Crusader castle that is popular with tourists. That previous incident resulted in ten deaths, seven of which were officers, and left dozens wounded. Security forces eventually killed the attackers after a long standoff. The recurrence of violence in this specific governorate may influence how businesses and travelers view the safety of the southern region in the coming months.

The immediate aftermath involves a complex search operation and a review of security protocols. The combination of a targeted group attack and the high number of casualties in a single location places significant pressure on local and national authorities. The focus now shifts to identifying the extremist group behind the strike and determining the broader implications for public safety in areas with significant religious minority populations.
