A high-level intelligence report delivered to the nation's top diplomat has raised immediate concerns regarding the safety of American personnel overseas. The document, which was distributed by the Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, indicates that threats against US citizens are no longer theoretical. Instead, the information suggests that preparations for attacks have moved past the planning phase, creating a tense situation as officials weigh the safety of those working abroad.
According to the memorandum, intelligence agencies have collected data through various channels showing a significant increase in Iranian efforts to target American personnel. The core message, authored by Clayton and sent to Secretary of State and National Security Adviser Marco Rubio, is direct. "The lethal plotting efforts by the Iranians against US citizens have reached advanced stages in both the Middle East and certain other countries," Clayton wrote. This communication was also copied to CIA Director John Ratcliffe.
However, the specific details of these threats are not available to the general public or the wider State Department. While the intelligence regarding potential attacks against government personnel is relevant to a broad group of people, the underlying information has only been shared with senior members of the secretary's team who hold the necessary clearances. Clayton noted that the memo itself is unclassified but did not name specific targets, methods of attack, or countries outside the Middle East where these plots may be developing. He has offered an additional briefing to the secretary and promised to work on downgrading the classification of as much information as possible so it can be shared with staff who might be at risk.
This warning arrives as the United States scales back its diplomatic presence in several Middle Eastern nations. Officials have cited concerns over potential Iranian retaliation and the possibility of renewed military operations against Tehran as reasons for reducing personnel. Earlier in the week, Washington ordered nonessential employees and their families to leave Saudi Arabia following an escalation in attacks by Iranian-backed Houthis. Reports indicate that further staff reductions have been ordered for embassies in the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Qatar, and Jordan.
The situation is fluid, with reports indicating the United States is accelerating the departure of diplomats and their families from various regional posts. Some of these personnel had only recently returned following evacuations earlier in the Iran war. Despite these movements, efforts to secure a diplomatic deal remain active. President Donald Trump stated on Friday that the United States could carry out another operation similar to Operation Epic Fury if an agreement is not reached. "We may do another little Epic Fury. Or they'll agree," Trump said.
