Seventeen is the age of the McKinney resident now in federal custody, accused by investigators of orchestrating a plot to kill Representative Keith Self. The detention marks a significant escalation in the security concerns surrounding the North Texas lawmaker as he campaigns for his third term in Congress.

Campaign officials confirmed the arrest details, noting that the FBI took the teen into custody on October 5. It was not until the following day, October 6, that the congressman’s team learned of the incident through U.S. Capitol Police. Officials stated that federal agents believed the suspect had been radicalized and was under active surveillance. Reports indicated the teen intended to target Self at a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17, an event featuring former Cowboys players and other notable guests. The plot was reportedly linked to a broader plan to carry out a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS.

Despite the severity of the allegation, Self stated that he proceeded with his campaign schedule without interruption. He attended the target event as planned, where he judged nineteen different chilies and three pots of beans. The congressman described the experience as delightful and noted that nothing occurred to disrupt the proceedings. Since the arrest, Self has continued to poll-greet and meet with voters, asserting that the incident will not deter him from alerting the public to what he views as a concerning political ideology.

The representative attributed his composed reaction to his background in military service. He explained that having deployed into combat zones multiple times allowed him to process the threat with calm rather than panic. His wife, a military spouse for 25 years, also understood the inherent risks. Self acknowledged that while he has received threats in the past, this was the first time one resulted in an arrest, distinguishing it from previous instances.

The timing of the alleged plot coincides with Self’s recent legislative activity. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and affirming the U.S. Constitution as the supreme law of the land. Additionally, his district includes McKinney, where a unanimous city council vote in August approved a site plan for a local mosque expansion. That decision followed hours of contentious public comment and was later followed by a recall effort against several council members.

The FBI Dallas office has not yet responded to requests for further information. The teen’s identity has not been released to the public as the investigation remains active. In the interim, Self’s opponent in the midterm election, Evan Hunt, condemned the plot on social media, adding a layer of partisan reaction to the unfolding story.

As early voting continues across the state, Self’s team has increased its situational awareness and security profile. While the campaign remains focused on the election, the incident has introduced a new variable into the race, with both the candidate and his opponents monitoring the situation closely.
